The department paid tribute to the fallen, as it does each year, as part of National Police Week observance. The most noticeable difference between this year and prior ceremonies was in who was present. Because of the COVID emergency and concerns about spreading the coronavirus, the department opted to have a private ceremony. No family members or former colleagues of fallen officers, or members of the public were invited to attend. In previous years, the ceremony drew several dozen guests. Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood earlier this week addressed a letter to family members that explained why the ceremony had to be closed off. She said it is disappointing to not allow the relatives of fallen officers to attend because they are considered members of the greater Springfield Police family.
